Global Trends in Laws in 2024
Strengthening Player Protection
Around the world, the requirements for player protection are tightening. In many countries, it is becoming mandatory to limit not only deposit amounts but also the time spent on the platform. Additionally, many countries now require adding self-exclusion features to obtain a license, helping to prevent gambling addiction.
Combating Fraud and Money Laundering
There is a clear trend toward the legalization of online gambling, with new licensing opportunities emerging. This requires greater attention to data security and payment processes on platforms. Stricter identity verification requirements are being introduced to prevent fraud, and many platforms are using artificial intelligence to track suspicious activity.
For our clients, our platform includes an integrated antifraud system that automatically monitors suspicious actions and transactions, protecting your business.
Advertising Restrictions
Most countries have become stricter in regulating online advertising. This could become a potential obstacle for operators, especially in the EU. Some countries have banned the use of celebrities in advertising, and Germany has completely banned online advertising.
What Changed in 2024: GEO Overview
What major laws were passed in 2024? Which GEOs have become less accessible, and which are more promising?
European Union
A law and platform are currently under development that will standardize licensing requirements and regulations for operators across the entire region. It will also allow data sharing between countries about operators.
However, licensing and operational requirements are becoming stricter. For example, in Spain, operators are required to highlight the risks of gambling on all advertising materials, and daytime advertising has been banned.
Asia
In India, there is also consideration of creating unified rules for online betting. A single tax will be introduced for online gambling activities nationwide rather than in individual states, which will help eliminate legal uncertainties and move out of the shadow zone.
However, in the Philippines, the situation for operators is becoming less favorable. Taxes are being raised, and additional fees are being introduced, complicating operations in this GEO.
Latin America
Latin America is an actively growing market. The big news for 2024: the legalization of online gambling in Brazil and the introduction of unified legislation. Peru is also rapidly developing, with the ability to obtain a license and operate legally on the market. The tax rate is relatively low: 12%.
In other GEOs, there is also an increasing focus on transparency in operator activities and strengthened player protection. Therefore, we can expect market growth in the near future.
Africa
In North African countries, operator requirements are tightening due to the growing and developing market. For example, Nigeria has introduced a requirement for data to be stored on local servers. It’s also important to cooperate with local payment systems and hire local employees.
On the other hand, South Africa is considering the legalization of online casinos, which would open up access to a large new market. Moreover, it is the most economically developed country on the continent, making this GEO even more promising.
What to Expect in 2025?
As you can see from the previous section, legislative changes are very contradictory. In many markets, it is becoming difficult and unprofitable to operate. However, new opportunities are emerging in Africa, Asia, and Latin America.
In the near future, we can expect the emergence of new markets, especially in Asian countries, where there is a strong demand for casinos and betting. However, due to advertising difficulties, attracting new players will be quite challenging.
There is also a trend toward the unification of laws and greater transparency in the work of operators, opening up new licensing opportunities.
